I have read several Patricia Macdonald books (Missing Child; From Cradle to Grave) and absolutely loved them. Sisters, however, just frustrated me. After tragically losing her parents in a car accident, Alex finds out she has a half sister she never knew about. She finds Dory - in jail - and helps find evidence that provides reasonable doubt, and Dory is released. I have usually rooted for the main character in Macdonald’s books. Not Alex. She becomes oddly obsessed with proving her sister’s innocence - he sister who is a complete stranger. She allows Dory to move in with her - even when Dory is rude, and displays troubling behavior. Dory may or may not be innocent - I won’t spoil that - but I could not root for Alex in letting Dory stay in her house, going out of her way to support her, with the disrespectful and disturbing events that occur. Additionally - I did correctly guess the final outcome of the story with pretty strong confidence - something I was not able to do in Macdonald’s other books. While they had me calculating and recalculating and on the edge of my seat - this book just had me wanting to shake Alex. There were some additional plot points that were just not well developed - and made the story kind of odd. Love P. Macdonald - but can’t recommend this one. This book starts kind of slow and I was a little confused as to where it was going, but once it does get going, it races along and I couldn't put it down. Alex is a frustrating character at first, but I identify with her longing for a family, and I admire her willingness to fight for that family once she finds it, no matter how hard it gets. Dory is another story. She's frustrating wrapped in exasperating coated with infuriating, but I was intrigued to see where ger story led. I figured out part of the twist ending, but the rest was a surprise, and I couldn't put the book down until I finished it. Well worth the read.
